Table Mountain Fire
I was running around town this afternoon watching the fire, like probably most of Cape Town, and have to say my hat's off to the crews of the 3 helo's trying to put a stop to the blaze.
Having to cope with that wind and all that smoke. You guys must have serious hair on your teeth. Best bit was standing right on the fence next to the reservoir where they filled the buckets and see the two Mi's going in together, side by side! Awesome flying chaps! Well done! Sorry for the old lady that died, and for the people who lost houses and other property. Hope they castrate the knob who started it, who is in custody according to the news. As Ned Seagoon would say: Wool dun boys, wool dun!!:ok: |
I second that, especially as I live in the neighbourhood. Much appreciated Steve and Co, it looked hectic up there today. Would post some photos I took but am a bit slow when it comes to advanced ppruning.

I took a few pics yesterday with my little 'mik 'n druk':
Three helis (two Mil and one Oryx) doing sterling stuff. Well done guys and thanks! These were taken at about 16h40: http://avcom.co.za/phpBB2/files/tmfire2_855.gif http://avcom.co.za/phpBB2/files/tmfire1_189.gif These were taken at about 17h30: http://avcom.co.za/phpBB2/files/tmfire6_147.jpg http://avcom.co.za/phpBB2/files/tmfire5_187.jpg http://avcom.co.za/phpBB2/files/tmfire3_166.gif |
Apprantly, the fire was started by a British tourist flicking a cigarete out of the car window  He has been arrested :ok:
A 65 year old British woman was killed by smoke inhalation, but her daughter managed to escape (physicaly) unharmed. |
Sorry to correct you Dean, but it was the Kamov, not an Oryx, with the 2 Mi8's. :ok:

So the SAAF is on cockpit standby....something we pay tax for! Now who is footing the bill for these private companies, yes and thanks for their great efforts, not free I suppose? The taxpayer/ratepayer again? Dubble invoicing?
Just asking.... |

I went right into the fire and was lucky to be allowed to go there to do my photography. I have posted some of my better images on my website at
www.airpic.co.za May I also commend the helicopter crews on an OUTSTANDING job done! I am convinced that at least the house I was monitoring with my camera was saved by the efforts of the helicopters, as is evident from the pictures I took! |
Well done to the crews.
I know the fynbos needs it occasionally but it's never a good thing to watch or to be caught up in.... |
