ZU-KIM a filmstar.....
Hi every one,
Went to go watch Lord of war last night, alot of south african actors etc, anyway besides the point but there is a particular sequence showing ZU-KIM shooting at an AN-12 (i think) but still it was a pretty cool sequence, now i was wonderiong besides the hollywood special effects etc, can that aircraft carry weapons, i was under the impression that it was a trainer. Still a pretty cool sequence and also you remember the caption competition that was held a while back? The pic looks fairly similar to the aircraft that lands on the road, so now we know the origin! :ok: |
The movie is on the Internation BA flights this month by the way.
Sad movie in a way = shows you what happens with gun-running and I do believe it is very much based on a true story. Must admit I cannot remeber the chopper reg. Well sighted Skywaiter :ok: |
ZU-KIM was flown by Pierre Gouws for this movie. The AN12 was arranged by Norse Air, as was the L39, and the filming took place at Robertson Airfield in the Western Cape. Pierre now owns his own L39 and the AN12, like so many other Russian aircraft operating in Africa, was written off in an accident two months after filming. The sequence where it gets dismantled by the locals was computer generated.

Red-Head Pierre Gouws ? Man can organise ! :ok: Long time I have not heard from him. Last time him, me and REAL ORCA was on instructors course (85) . I seem to remeber him flying a C210 I think when I saw him parking next to our Citation at Bloem. He still said to me the best passengers he has ever flown around. (He flew for AVBOB or simmilar) :p:p:p |
ZU-KIM's "missles"
|
Looks like a 20mm gun pod?
|
Feeding the ammo from?
Looks more like some Eastern bloc SNEB thing but probably just a mockup with strobes or spark plugs and a fuel injector. |
Like most intermediate and advanced trainers, the L-39 has the capability to carry weapons.
Weapons include up to 2,425 lbs. of weapons, including bombs, gun pods, and a single five-camera reconnaissance pack. The L-39ZA is capable of carrying one 23-mm GSh-23L two-barrel cannon with 150 rounds, and provision for up to 1100 kg (2,425 Ib) of weapons on four underwing hardpoints, including bombs of up to 500 kg (1,102 Ib), rocket and gun pods, or two drop tanks |
It was Actually Just A Big Pipe With A Whole Lot Of Smaller Ones Inside It!!

Sounds about right, Gulf.:ok: What? No flash effects? SFX guys are slipping up.:suspect:
Warriest thing I ever saw was a SM208 with rocket pods....:ooh: :uhoh: Nice looking aircraft but the pods do seem a bit incongruous. |
