2 dead at Rand

pretty much 2nd hand info but apparently a aircraft crashed at Rand, 2 dead! Anyone with definate info?

ok update from news24

Johannesburg - Two people died when a single-engine aircraft crashed at Rand Airport in Germiston on the East Rand on Friday afternoon.

Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson Sugan Moodley said they appeared to have died on impact when the plane hit a pile of rubble during what appeared to have been an attempted crash-landing.

"Air traffic authorities and emergency service personnel are at the scene," he said early on Friday evening.

No details were available about the identity of the two people who had been on board the aircraft, which Moodley described as a Sonex.

Very sad...rumour has it that one of the pilots was Chris Twyford from the flying lions team...:( :( Makes you think that when you pop up for a small flip, it could be your last. Suppose that risk comes with being a pilot. Still ......sad stuff!

I met Chris for the first time recently, at aerobatic nationals at Brits. From the brief contact I had with him, he certainly came across as a great guy. People like Chris really helped to put first timers like myself at ease.

On the Saturday afternoon I was ferrying back to Rand, going through the the SRA near Pelindaba. I'd just put out a position call when a voice came back across the radio: "Check your 5 o'clock". I looked around expecting to see a dot in the distance - and got a bit of a fright. Chris was flying his Pitts a few metres off my wing, big grin on his face.

My sincere condolences to the families of both pilots. A great loss to the local aviation community

Just had a telephone call from an old friend of mine to tell me of the death of CT and his friend. My caller, CT and I all used to work together at Bop Air.(There's a clue as to the identity of the fabulous fleet feline).
I wonder whether the pile of rubble was actually that:mad: mine dump on the Rwy 36 take off path. It claimed the life of a very good friend of mine some years ago. (LB or LF, as she used to be).
It made night circuits off 36 at FAGM a real nightmare. We knew that it was curtains if we had an EFTO. The only possible place to land would have been Germiston Race Course. I don't know if that's even still there. But you couldn't see it at night anyway.
That's more or less all, bye the bye, except that, in any event, that dump should have been rmoved years ago.
Great sympathy to friends and families of both aviators.

Sad to hear the news about Chris Twyford, worked and shared a house with him when he joined Mmbatho Air Services (Bop Air) in Mafeking. I recall he survived a deadstick in a Bandit near Pretoria.
