Just saw some' about KQ having its first female captain and by the way on a 767:ok: Am doing cargo runs from miami for turbine time sake. Wat does the Kenyan CAA need for me to convert my FAA ATP. Tafadhali, any info will do me some good. Leteni bidii

From what I have been made to understand. What KCAA need you to have to convert your FAA ATPL to KCAA ATPL, is a really deep FAT wallet and lots of patience while they stick the needle in u and drain the $$$$ out. :}

The info is on KCAA.org or something like that. I'll be headed that way soon. I think I now have enough $$$$ for them to stick it in me :E

Actually, she's a captain on the 737-300 if you check on the rumors and news forum, you will find a similar thread where I have posted more info on her.

As I understand it, converting your FAA ATPL will only require you to sit for the Kenyan Air Law exam, I think an RT oral exam for your Radio License and that should be it. However you will also need to do a Gas Turbine exam and Performance A exam. These two are not mandatory but any employer flying anything other than pistons will expect you to have them.

The conversion procecss is now less painless due to a major purge that is ongoing at the KCAA targeting mainly the licensing section.

Captain Ms Irene Koki Mutungi(30) heralded her promotion with a maiden flight Nairobi to Entebbe aboard KQ 410 accompanied by an all-women crew: a First Officer, Flight Engineer, Flight Purser and Flight Attendants.

The first Kenya Airways woman captain of a Boeing 767-300, Irene Mutungi flew a special all ladies flight to mark her promotion.

Is it a 37 or 67 she is capt of? Heart warming to see they are prunning the rot that soils and mediocres the nobility in licensing. Cheers.

She is newly promoted on her first command as Capt. of a 737-300, (don't know if anyone else female is on the 767 - don't think so)

If one wants to be cynical, note that she is the chief pilots daughter......

As for the all female crew that day, note that there was a cockpit crew of 3, the 3rd member was actually a male "flight engineer" (since when did a 737 need a flight engineer??) In fact he was some sort of "minder" (read- training capt) The flight was actually a publicity stunt for the airline (good) and the chief pilots daughter (not so good)

Realistically she would not be rostered that way, hence the minder.....

Well I think she's a 737-300 Skipper. Good for her. Her father Capt Mutungi is no longer chief at KQ. There was Mwangi after him, and now I believe it's Auma.

The conversion in Kenya will require patience. No need for a fat wallet. Thank goodness some of the offending types that took bribes, have been canned.

The previous post about the conversion is spot on I think. The only thing I'd add is get stamps on every page of your logbook, otherwise you just may get sent back. KCAA has a love affair with stamps that "certify" the entries are true.

If you have a computer logbook, God help you.

Hurry back if you're keen. KQ is apparently looking for pilots. You'll right seat for a while, but all in all not a bad proposition.

Does anyone have the KCAA phone number? There's alot of information that guyz need to know and fully understandwhen it comes to certiticate conversion especially from the FAA.

She's Capt on B737-300, ten years FO with KQ. Newspaper did their research thoroughly as always! There are 2 female 767 f/o's, no Capts. Thought the flight engineer was female too, but may be completely wrong on that. Flight engineers on the 73? Fuelling and 'clearing' snags to get the A/C back to NBO if needed!
Mutungi Snr left approx 3 years ago.
Simba, as spydee says things getting much easier with KCAA. Though I think a work permit ( ie a job..catch 22) still a requirement. They've got investigators working on the $$$ for ratings issue. Apparently engineers had it worse than us with those refusing to pay waiting a year plus for results....

Thanx a bunch 5Y,
I still have a few months left to finish my first officer program that I painfully :{ raised money for. I guess I could wear akala since I almost ran bankrupt. I am a rated 737 and pushing for a back-to-back 767and 777 ratings next year. I might choose to start my career with KQ but they need to increase their $$$$. Otherwise since am free falling, anywhere will do for bread and water :}

No prob Simba. With 73,76 and 77 ratings keep an eye on developments at KQ. $$$$ not too bad I think, but not of middle east standards..... Beer's cheaper though! Best of luck.

SIMBA KALI - I can confirm that i did not receive that article from you!

Yes, KQ are exploring the possibilty of using contract pilots but KALPA needs to buy in for this to happen.

It does not matter what jet rating you hold especially if you don't have time on type. If you have time on type then you will still have to pass through the KQ hoops. At the moment from the 20 low time qualified applicants (those who met the minimum requirements as per the ad) only 6 have been invited to join as SO's. From the high time applicants lots with jet time, the number was whittled to 14 and I am reliably informed that only a similar number made it, they will join as FO's.

Yes the seniority system at KQ is very strict, for instance an Ex Airforce Presidential Jet commander on the Fokker 70 recently joined the airline as an FO.

Quite a system KQ has, I will assume it is for the best of interest of kenyan nationals trying to safe guard jobs with the airline. One old timer advised me to go ahead for FO training and ratings, just to give me an edge. I hope this will. By the way spydee, wat who are you with south of the sahara? Am soon packing back to start my long treck home. Asante sana boss for the good insight.

exciting at kq at the moment.huge expansion plans and huge pilot shortfall.

for a kenyan with entrylevel experience, definately the best option. who else will let you
fly a 737 with less than 500 hours in africa?
