Jobs in Africa

Does anyone know what the chances are of getting a job in Africa with an FAA ME CPL IR? (also got JAA CPL and ATPL's) (I would ideally love to be flying a multi) I have a year before havnig to pay off a big loan and would love a bit off african adventure whilst building experience. I heard a good way to go about it is to just turn up and network!

Thanks!!

Flying jobs in africa?

I understand that there are some great jobs available in Africa for low hour pilots and am just wondering if anyone has any info or pointers on how I can aquire one. I understand that the only way is to just turn up with CV and licence and hope for the best but I am unsure as to where to go, what companies are out there, and well anything that will help my search!!

I have both JAA and FAA licenses and 300 hours TT plus a 737 type rating.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

B Sousa 14th Feb 2006 01:11

300 hours TT and a 737 Type rating???
You must have moe than enough money that you dont need a job. Buy a Plane and charter it out becuase I certainly have not heard of anyone hiring a 300 hour 737 driver.......... Maybe, just maybe 3000 hours.
300 hours in a C206 sounds better.

Shrike200 14th Feb 2006 05:49

I'm not quite sure what expectations you might have Snake80, but Mr Sousa is correct. Africa doesn't really work along the lines of Europe where (it seems) there isn't really a middle ground in terms of flying jobs, ie there isn't much in the way of general aviation, so people tend to end up on an airliner with that experience. There isn't that much here either, but you would be expected to step something along the lines of: C206/Van (Maun etc), Baron/Kingair (Contract, wherever), 1900 (contract, wherever, Solenta, NAC et al), Regional airline (possibly smaller jet), Jet (80+ seats). Something like that at least. I have never heard of anybody getting a medium passenger (20+ seats) jet job in SA with 300 hrs, but I suppose it happens. Sorry, that wasn't very artfully worded, but anyway.

If you want to fly out in Africa, see the continent (which is beautiful), are able to shoulder the responsibility of operating far from home with corresponding difficulties with support, and can operate away from family/home for 1-2 months at a time, then come try down here. You get to do things you would never dream of seeing in an airline environment in Europe (meant in both the good and the bad sense!), and it's great life experience and plenty of flying experience too!

Thats only my experience of contract flying, others may differ. But I would bet it won't involve a 737!

Any possibilities of employment in Tanzania for ops controllers? Specifically helicopter ops, but I'm willing and able to learn about fixed wing ops as well. I'm based in Johannesburg at the moment, but I may be moving to Dar-Es-Salaam later this year.

What other options do I have? I love the aviation sector, it's become part of my life and I really don't want to leave it. :{

:p Thanks a mil.:p

Guys, the general rule on this thread is to post your qualifications (licenses & type-ratings held), experience (hours) & then your expectations. I'll give the most recent posters a chance to edit their posts with this info, without which I'll be obliged to bin their posts.
