Direct flights Kenya to USA

Kenya has been jubilant this week about the news that the USA will allow direct flights from Kenya to the USA (see local news report below). It would be very good for Kenya's economy if this works out, but I am confused at the timing considering how hard President Trump is working to achieve more secure US borders (the dreaded list of 7, ban on immigrants and so on). Interesting.....

By GERALD ANDAE
Four other African countries’ airports have achieved the Category One status.
These are South Africa, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, and Nigeria.
The direct flights, however, will only start after certain processes—including technical compliance and commercial arrangements—are met.

Corporate News
Kenya receives Washington’s approval for direct flights to the USA.
Kenya is upbeat about launching direct flights to the United States earlier than planned after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved non-stop air travel between the two countries.

Inspectors from America’s FAA gave Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a clean bill of health after an audit leading to the award of the long awaited Category One status.
This sets the stage for signing of flight agreements between Washington and Nairobi as well as airlines seeking direct flights between the US and Kenya before commercial operations can start.
Kenya, which hosted President Barack Obama in July 2015, wants to boost exports to Washington and increase visits by American tourists. Starting flights was part of a package of deals announced during Obama’s visit. “Kenya has today been granted Category One status by the US Government following a meticulous assessment audit by the FAA and other US agencies,” said a statement from the Transport ministry.
“The granting of this status means that airline operators, both in Kenya and the US, which have long desired to operate directly... will now be allowed to carry on their operations after certain processes including technical compliance and commercial arrangements are met.”
The FAA was meant to issue a statement by time of going to Press yesterday. The second class status of JKIA means passengers flying from Kenya to the US have to transit through Europe, the Middle East or any of the four African countries whose airports have achieved the Category One status. These are South Africa, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, and Nigeria.
Delta Airlines previously set a launch date for direct flights but cancelled due to security concerns.

Financially embattled Kenya Airways also plans to offer direct flights. US traffic usually transits through hubs like Dubai and Amsterdam. JKIA failed the US safety review in 2013 but has since improved security through upgrades.
New terminals have been opened over the past three years, allowing the airport to separate departures and arrivals, a key security requirement.
“With Category One there will be faster movement of goods and people between the two countries, with an eradication of any delay especially to horticultural produce from Kenya,” the statement said.
In order to attain and maintain the rating, a country must demonstrate compliance with safety standards contained in the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s practices for aircraft operations and maintenance.
Kenya has been implementing a raft of recommendations by the US government to enhance security, among them separation of passenger arrival and departure terminals, clearing the flight path and fencing off the airport.

There is no ban on immigrants. There's a temporary order regarding non-citizen entry from certain nations. It's a security issue. Why would Trump not permit Kenyans? The US and Kenya have excellent relations. A Kenyan that has travelled to Somalia or is of Somali decent will have issues, before and after the Trump administration. I have been to Sudan and Somalia and I have issues. I have to wear sunscreen.

This is awesome news and credit to Transport CS and KCAA for getting things right and meeting ICAO Audits.

Now the interesting part is we wait and see if the carrier will get it right too. As much as we all see the goodness in JKIA getting CAT 1, the carrier may turn this into a disaster!

For starters, they do not have the right aircraft to fly to Dulles (Rumour is this could be their first destination). 787 is too small to meet the demand leave alone the carrier making a coin out of it. The carrier is aiming for a NBO-Dulles non stop which can work given NBO is 8 hours ahead of IAD and no East Africa airlines flies direct to N.America!

Secondly, the carrier does not have the Crew for North America! As it is now they don't have enough crew for their current routes!

Thirdly, What ever aircraft KQ decides to use has to counter what Delta is planning to use. KLM has been flying to Kenya everyday on a 747 FULL while KQ flies to AMS on a 787! How charming!

The Kenya Govt is currently doing everything possible to protect KQ from aggressive competition from other carriers BUT they can't protect them for life! KQ has to step up and make good business decisions to bring back the "Pride of Africa"!

254, did you fly the 76 with KQ and allow a WB Skipper into your office from Jomo to BKK along with his gf?

My curiosity in the timing of this announcement stems from the following observations - in no particular order....
- Trump is keen to re-establish the credentials of his secure border policy
- Yemen and Somalia both feature on his List of Seven - both of whom are close neighbours to Kenya
- Jonny Anderson has been brought in to bring the Kenya Airports Authority into line internationally
- Michael Joseph has been brought into bring Kenya Airways back into the land of the living
- Al Shabaab affiliated themselves to ISIS a year or two ago
- Trump's presidential campaign highlighted those he considered corrupt African regimes
- KQ would appear to currently lack true long-range facilities to handle USA operations
- A large Somalia community borders JKIA
- Rumours have it that a great deal of Somali money is being invested into local aviation.

It just strikes me as curious timing to say the least.

Lastly I don't know heavy jets - so what sort of payload/range does the 777 and 787 have when operating under JKIA parameters?

Too many conspiracy theories! There's already a large number of Somalis in the US. Obamas Dad was Kenyan and it didn't happen during his tenure in office.

You might want to inform Ethiopian Airlines that no East African airlines fly to North America. You can contact them via their station managers at Kennedy, Newark, Dulles, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

Great circle track is around 6615nm on google, Nairobi to Washington Dulles, then alternate on top of that, say Baltimore plus reserves. With experience on big heavy long range jets, this would be in the range of B777-200LR. 347 tons take off weight, around 240 seats in 3 class, up to159 tons of fuel with AUX tanks, it could stay airborne for almost 20 hours, at 490Kts.

But, take off from 5600ft altitude has problems for range on big two engine jet. I have not run the figures at all.

@bluesideoops,

Which technically are you talking about?

The UN seems to think Ethiopia is in East Africa

Addis is like 8000' high and the runway at Jomo is over 10k' long. They can go from NBO to BKK no problem. Especially in the AM as it's usually around 18-22 at Nairobi.

Apologies for butting in and sounding slightly anal, but I believe the words 254 used were "Direct to North America"

4Runner.
Max structural take-off weight of B777-200LR 347451KG.
Performance from HKJK, rwy 06 Elev 5330ft, 4117m TORA, wind calm, 18c, 1013hpa,
performance take-off is limited to 319763kg. Dry operating weight 162800KG Max Landing 223200KG. Max Zero Fuel weight 209100KG
That's a penalty of almost 28 tons that can't fly and limits payload or range. We also fly the B777-200F from HKJK to AMS and limited to the weight 319763kg to Amsterdam. BKK is no issue. IAD is an issue from high altitude airport. The aircraft would need to fly 6600nm against a headwind of maybe 40kts average, to IAD and then 80nm to Baltimore, contingency plus reserves.

1. ET goes not fly to Kennedy

2. ADD to LAX goes via DUB in both directions
ADD to YYZ goes via DUB on the outbound and direct on the return
ADD to EWR goes via LFW in both directions

Part of the reason for this, especially on the YYZ flight, is that the high altitude of ADD prevents departure with a full fuel load.

Actually it's not only East Africa but NO African Airline flies direct NON STOP both trips to IAD. SAA flies to IAD but stops in DKR trip back same with ET stops in Rome trip back.

Kenya Airways have been handed a golden lottery! I hope they don't rush into it even if an American carrier starts flying to NBO before them. They have to get it right!

Well.. though they aren't in Sub Saharan Africa, Egypt Air and Royal Air Maroc both fly to JFK direct. Arik Air also used to fly from Lagos.
