Working and living in Nigeria...
Hi everybody, I'm trying to gather info on what sort of lifestyle and working environment you find in Nigeria.

Nigeria is the place to be today,
The highways are 4 lanes, there is fast food places everywhere within easy reach of the public transport system that really functions extremely efficiently
Buy an Okada day pass and you have limitless transport. Taxi's are everywhere to be found and they have automatic Green open air, air-conditioning no where to be found but unique to Africa.The aviation sector is all about gearing to CPDL-C so the airwaves are really busy.
You will love it man! Pay is on time and in some cases you even get paid in advance! Can you believe! You have medical aid, retirement insurance, a personal driver with PSD teams and above all, wait for it: flight planning is an e-mail function with weather reports, radar coverage, cyclone forecasts etc. etc. so easily available it is unbelievable! The hotels are top class and you can buy anything on the net and it is delivered instantly to your doorstep.

If your on a 4 on 4 off all expenses paid and $10,000 or over a month flying a nice looking Bizjet like most of our expat colleagues do here then by all means.... Welcome..
Anything less for example the likes of Arik and all that.....Oh well all you have to do is look at the posting above mine....Lool.....I'll let them help you out there...
Seeking Advise from Pprune could be very tricky.....try to make your decision and mind up by looking at other areas of information and news...

What is your motivation to work or live in Nigeria ?
Salary and work schedule attracts a lot of people, but at the end many of them are leaving Nigeria frustrated.
So if your main objectives are money and time off, then don’t even think about coming here.
On the other hand if you like to share your experience, if you’re able to take bull**** on a daily base, without getting nervous and angry, if you are decisive and like challenges, than I guess you might be alright.
Working in Nigeria means, you have to convert your standards to given conditions without losing the safety point of view.
And never ever try to compare your old working environment with the new working world !!
So if you are an open minded person, who likes to look behind the curtain, you will find a lot of good and friendly people here !!!

There are good companies and bad companies to work for in Nigeria, the same as in most countries. Some people will talk about crime and security levels here, yet they're from countries where the murder rate is 10 times higher than Nigeria. The reality is that it's like most places - your own attitude will be what most determines whether you love or hate it . Nigeria is a Third World country, so don't come expecting First World facilities. Yes, everyone knows it's corrupt, but there are other countries which are even more corrupt. Come with an open mind and if you don't like it, at least you can say you tried.

Bluejuice is spot on. And not just with Nigeria, but Afrika. I've never read a more honest and self-aware post in the however many years I've been reading PPrune. Everyone else who paints a rosier picture either has one of the extremely rare jobs on this CONTINENT that is legit, safe, accountable and well funded or the more likely scenario, is in their early twenties and bright eyed and bushy tailed or is probably recently divorced with a new local girlfriend that does durty stuff...If you get paid on time here, it's because it's a government job. If it's a government job and you get paid on time, it's because the government is recently propped up by a western power or eastern vulture. If you have Indians, Yemenis, Phillipinos and Uruguayans trying to get you to fly overweight or with not enough fuel while they sit in an air conditioned container, it's a UN job. Either way, they're all the same same. Anyone else who says different is blowing smoke where the sun don't shine my brotha.

Wow, there are some really unhelpful replies from cynical and disillusioned no-hopers here 
. 4runner and BLUEJuice obviously have some real issues either with Africa in general or Nigeria in particular 
. Traz, why not tell us more about what type of in formation you're searching for? I spent more than half my working life in Africa and had some of the best and worst of times there. I worked for great companies with standards as high as any in the world, and rich, corrupt crooks 
. It's impossible to just generalise the way some posters do because of a few good or bad experiences. Whatever works for you, works for you. I hope you have a good experience and good luck. I had both good and bad, as with everything in my life wherever I went. I had great times in both Africa and Europe and awful times in both as well. The dice fall where they do, no matter how much you shake them or blow on them before you roll them. Good luck

I am well out of it now.
All I can say, if you really, really need information about Nigeria, is that you should go to the the website for the foreign service for whatever country you are a citizen of, and look up what they say about Nigeria, whether traveling there is a good idea or not.
If you still have any questions after that, go to the BBC News and read what is in the news about Nigeria. I can sum some of that up: Seven foreigners were just kidnapped there, up north. Last week, I think it was, a ship was hijacked, in the south. Not long before that, there was trouble again in Jos, which is sort of in the middle.
Except for trouble in the north, the south and the middle, though, I haven't heard about much other recent trouble in Nigeria.
We used to say, "Oh well, at least Abuja is safe." There was a very messy bombing there that you might as well look up, while you are at it.

Trim Stab are you sure about your information on Total pulling out all their expats from Abuja....I know the French Embassy sent out a mail to all french citizens residing in the Northern parts of Nigeria with regards to threats it had received due to the french intervention in Mali to be cautious or even stay clear but we have no information of Total pulling out all Expats...
All through the militancy conflict in port harcourt a few years back Total Expats stayed put although those with family were advised to send their wives and children home and some stayed with their spouses in the Total compound in Port Harcourt.
About to depart LFPB for DNAA and will have to check this out on arrival cos I have family with Total..

LIFESTYLE IN NIGERIA
I am a proud Nigerian (if you don't go you cant know) and wouldn't trade that for a right seat at the moment (maybe i will think that over again just one more time if i have an offer lol)Come to Nigeria with an open mind, a lot of patience, a bit of street smart will help too and most especially if you want to live like a tourist budget at least $10000 a month but if you want to live like a local you can survive with less than $100 a day. Do your own research and most of all make up your mind on why you are going there and what you plan to acheieve by the trip. BON VOYAGE MON AMI
