Not too late to fly. My brother did the same thing and has a good contracting job flying a Beech 1900 at the age of 53.
Read the career guidance chapter in the FTC website. Flight Training South Africa Pilot Training Garden Route
Maybe it will give you a few ideas.

Ok, I will give you my opinion, chances are however you won't like it.

It all depends on what you are looking for. I have no expertise in corporate or small aircraft flying, but I do know the international airline market quite well ( I am with a big Asian airline).

I can tell you with absolute certainty that you will never get a shot at a job in this part of the industry. Your ratio of experience vs age is too unfavourable.

You will also have zero chances getting a job at a reputable airline in Europe, they all have age limits which you exceed.

Unfortunately, these are the jobs where you make money, have the security of usually financial stable employers and acceptable working hours. Plus healthcare plan, pension, insurance, housing, education etc.

If I were you I would find out how much a pilot in a small aircraft can make, my guess is very little.

Chances are you will eventually be lured into paying for a type rating or any other sort of training. The link above from congoman is already slightly suspicious.

Hope that helps with your decision.

Thank you for your opinion,

Just what you says With my age and the experience I have no chance with the airlines I agree. So my intention is in the first place to make much of hours and that is only possible with the small charters in Africa and I know I will not earn a lot of money but I thinks when I have flown for 2 years in Africa I will get more then approx. 2000 hours as bush-flying,and there are many companies who are still hiring depending on your hours. And btw my origin is Turkish I gues if my grand total time rises above 2000 hours which of all pilot in command hours, then things may change.and I am sorry for my English language which is not perfect.

Sam Ting Wong,

Please read what the original poster wrote carefully, I don't think he is interested in flying in "a reputable airline in Europe". He also stated places he is interested in flying and from the look of things he is interested in bush flying.

As for the link you said is slightly suspicious, FTC is indeed a reputable flying school. Has been training pilots for a very long time now.

Read up on the Maun guide and the other long thread, all your answers are there.

Also, I wouldn't call yourself a ATPL, frozen ATPL, chilled ATPL or even a nippy ATPL, if you're asked, or for your CV, just put CPL.

Maybe somewhere down on the bottom by education add that you passed your ATPL subjects or something.

I know someone who is pushing 50 who just got his first jet job flying A320s for a low cost Asian carrier. He has over 3000 hours flying pistons and has around 1000 hours on a multi-turbo prop. He's not the only one either, as I've heard a few stories of pilots in their late 40's getting jet jobs, albeit with LCC's, but if you're in it for the flying and not the perks, then who cares if it's LCC that you're flying for.

Keep at it

Keep at it. The industry is changing daily and the airlines are hireing lots of folks again. It has just started and remember hundreds of guys are reaching
retirement age daily. The airlines will be looking for qualified people regardless of age in a couple of years as they have ordered a lot of aircraft and not enough people are coming into this industry as it is not paying as
well as it should right now.

Dear Sam.

There is no much reputable airlines in Europe you can count it with your fingers.Even I was reqruited by the other Charter airlines I had to pay for the type-rating and paying to seat for maybe few hunderd hours on the right seat with 1200 euro wage for 1 year without any guarantee and poor experience so worthless. But flying as Bush-Pilot and as pilot in command and not paying to fly but be payed for flying and the best experience you can get than is Africa much better than the pay 2 fly airlines in Europe.

I thought you were asking about a career. If you are happy with bush flying andat your age it is possible to get a job in this area, good on you, best of luck.

I just wanted to tell you the (ugly) truth about the airline industry, that's all.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

Arrow Greetings From Nairobi - Kenya

I have just completed my CPL training and received the same from INDIA.
I have 200hrs of TT, and I just want to start my career in general aviation sector/ bush flying ops in Africa.
Now after reading most of the threads, I'm aware that Kenya hires local citizens and Botswana now requires 500hrs with instruction.

I would be really grateful if anyone could give me any feedback on what possible opportunities I have, and if there's I can do to boost my resume.

Thank You.

Sam, There is clearly 'sam ting wong' with your comments here and that is that they are set in the 50ton++ jet market. There is a lot out there that isn't in that category and 'flaps' is clearly aiming at that. The pilot that I mentioned ("I know someone who gained his CPL and first airline job in his early 50s and he went on to retire as a captain.") was in a turbo-prop airline (and they can be 'reputable', stop sticking that 50ton++ jet nose of yours so high in the air!!) in Europe.

Flaps, that suggestion by James331 about not quoting your ATPL on your CV is very valid as most of the chief pilots in jobs like that will most likely only have a CPL themselves and could well see anyone mentioning his ATPL as a bit of a 'smart arse'. (I once actually sat in on a 'management' discussion that went along those lines!) Just put 'CPL' on your CV! Do a lot of research on the area before you go so that you know a fair amount of what you are talking about and can sound enthusiastic and that should put your chances of a job way ahead of the 20-year-olds who just want to do it for 'hours building'. You might even end up staying and becoming one of the senior pilots there!

The type of flying that you can do there is fun, so ignore anything said by any grumpy jet pilots who have never done bush flying!

Follow all +ive advice(s) on here - gravitate towards all those who are +ive towards flying.

Having a Captain who is younger than you is great - to see the young being Captains is rewarding and it helps them too!

Hey you got this far - don`t quit now, and hey, you would not be able to quit anyway - hope you like Africa, I`ve never been. Can you send us a postcard of real elephants (before they are all shot and made extinct by the end of the next decade, by ivory poachers).

More importantly,

Flaps, keep me updates, sounds an awesome adventure!! I'm similar in age and less experienced. I'm embarking on my CPL soon. Have same aspirations as yourself but still working as a cop. Got 4 years left building up flight time then I'm looking for something similar as I too have missed the big league, that's not what I'm looking for though.

The constructive advice is refreshing to read.

2000 Hours in 2 years is REALLY optimistic. Legal max for single pilot ops is 1000 hours annually if I remember correctly. (Don't quote me on this).

A much more realistic number is 300-400, with some operators you might get 750 annually.
