hmm.... so without a caravan rating is it hopeless, or just not likely? And for those countries (FAA) that don't issue ratings for small planes, a 'caravan rating' would basically be a grad certificate from training provider with some hours in type?

I would not say is hopeless, but you get bigger chances if you have it! For those Countries you have to have the "training" endorsed on your logbook, with stamp and instructor signature

So the situation changed quite a bit in the last few years? I thought there was definitely a chance with 250hTT.
Next time I hear the words "Pilot Shortage" I'm gonna throw up.

As written above...if you have 500hrs, or better 800hrs, you can try your luck. There are still companies who have Airvan/C206 and hire pilots to start flying piston before moving to turbine

You are wrong! There is a kind of "Pilot shortage" situation, but if there are local pilots available why the Goverment should give the green light to hire expats? I hear people complaining about this regulation, but I never hear people complaining how is impossible for a non US citizen or green card holder to get a pilot job in the States!

quick question: how easy is it to renew your medical in Africa? Specifically a Canadian (TCCA) medical?

Africa is a very big place. Which country would you like to renew your medical in, in Africa - there are 54 of them.

Dr Bjorn Buchner in Pretoria, South Africa, does Canadian medicals.

Planning to do job hunting in Africa

Currently Hold an ICAO CPL license with IR/Multi/MCC/SEA endorsements... with 300hours TT and 15 grand to invest in training if required...
Can anyone give me some advice please... getting a bit desperate ..

Save your money...no one will look at you with 300hrs, in Botswana minimum is 800hrs and much better if you have a Caravan rating

Almost got too quiet in here - Will be going to Namibia & Botswana early january for at least 6 weeks to look for a job - ticket already booked. Not sure what the availability of FAA instructors is down there, but if anyone needs a flight review i'll be happy to help.

But you can try in Namibia, I heard that Scenic Air is looking for pilots, minimum 300hrs TT

It is very quiet because nowadays few expat are interesting to came to Botswana looking for a job, and those who are do not have the 800hrs TT requested by labour department. Since 2015/6 most of the low hours position have been filled by local pilots so if you have less than 800hrs I will suggest to go direct to Namibia, you will have many more chances there than here!

I have more than 800, but still more interested in namibia to be honest. I understand lower hours in namib, but since i come from a german culture, namibia just speaks to me more. I figure i'd probably also have a higher chance of getting into a twin in namibia. But my primary goal is to fulfill a long standing desire and have a few good years of adventure in africa before i get too old and only have regrets to look back on - i also have a reputation as the 'crazy uncle' to uphold (apparently its 'crazy' to go to africa, imagine that) ;-).

Hi guys,
First, let me tell you thanks for all information on this thread, really appreciated !

Now, I need your opinion about my situation.

I have 1450 TT, 450 Multi PIC on C310R. Autumm 2020, I will go with to Bostwana to see how is really this place and make sure it's possible for me and my wife to live here. My goal to find a job is January 2021. I will prospect during our first trip too. My goal is to fly C208 but i'm not in a hurry, just live this adventure.
Summer 2020, I have the possibility to fly C310R ( about 100 hours) OR C182RG ( possibility 150 hours). My question is: Which one would you recommand to me ? Flying C182RG and gain experience on this plane (similar C206) give me more opportunity ?

Some companies require experience in a 206 or 210. Im not sure if this is due to most applicants having less than 500 hours or if its a company requirement.

Some experience in a high wing cessna (182) could be a benefit if you havent flown one before.

Maybe contact the main companies by phone and ask what their minimums are.

Some time in a C206 and in a GA8 would certainly help as these are the common types.
