Lopa you're right about the shortage. I read in the Business Daily back in 2011 that KQ were predicting a shortage of about 300 pilots come 2014 and during the chat some of us were having with the guy who was giving us back our certificates, he explained that 1 Embraer needs 16 pilots to run ideally and they're nowhere near that number. He also said that the 777s that run the long haul routes such as Guangzhou need to fly with 4 flight deck crew members i.e. 2 captains and 2 first officers, one crew being the relief crew, but at the moment, they're flying with 3 flight deck crew because they just don't have the staff!

It's now 2014 and the Business Daily prediction may be coming true. This is great news for us who aspire to fly for our national carrier. Remember he also advised that they would love to take as many applicants as possible for training but unfortunately most don't pass the testing stages. So ladies and gents, as we eagerly await the next invitation email, let's prepare ourselves to bring our A game to those tests because clearly, the vacancies are there.

No shortage of FO's on the 767, as a matter of fact they are all scheduled to retire by Nov. this year. The numbers on the Narrow body however, are pretty dynamic, and i highly doubt if the E jet shortage on the right side is only 12. The E jet and 737 are currently feeding the 787 and 777 with FO's, as the senior FO's on the 767 and 777 transition to the narrow body for command. so naturally the numbers have to be replenished.

An educated guess from my side would be a requirement of about 70 new FO's on the narrow body this year. Six 787 being delivered this year and being crewed almost entirely from the 737, and two more 77W also to arrive this year, plus about 15 FO's upgrading to the left side from the 777. Normal crew requirements as per the company is about 8 FO's per aircraft, and we are looking at 8 new Aircrafts this year on the higher fleet plus a couple of upgrades.

Point to note though, this requirements will be met by both AB initio cadets and direct entry pilots.

All the best to everyone going through the interviews at present.

Kenya Airways Expansion

odericko2000. I'll take what you said as reliable information since you are a field player in aviation.

Some days back I bumped into that KQ expat thread. A poster called V10tail and yourself came in to defend kenyans. Thats a good thing particularly to the youth. Ab Initio is still alive because of such efforts from Kenyan pilots.

FOs

The numbers I gave were actual data from KQ mid last year before acquisition of 2 E-jets FFJ & FFK and 777-300 KZZ. three 767s are going back replaced by 9 new crafts, with another 3-4 737s going to Jambojet. Therefore the numbers dont change much this year

LOPA,

They do change, as i am aware, no first officer is moving from the 767 to the 787, all the FO's to the 787 will come from the 737, looking at 6 of the 78's arriving this year and a fleet requirement of 8 FO's per aircraft, you are already looking at 48 people moving from the narrow body to the wide body, they have to be replaced, don't they? Then there are the senior Embraer FO's who are moving straight to the 777, and there's two more 77W arriving this year, the numbers you are talking about are not taking all this movements into consideration.
Someones got to keep the E jet and the 737 fleet flying. Mark you, despite the moving of the 73 classics to Jambo jet, the union has insisted their crewing has to be with KQ pilots.

If that's the case, JJ operating with KQ crew, then the shortage might actually come close to 48/50 (the current 16 shortage plus the 48 for new crafts minus the 3 767s crew shifting).

Also consider there are atleast 2 SO groups(approx 14) that will check out sometime this year. But these are just my estimates

odericko2000 and LOPA

So if all the senior FO's on the 767 and 777 transition to the narrow body for command, what will happen to 767 skippers?

Other than the 6 78's and 2 77W arriving this year, wasn't K.A meant to receive 2 more EMB190 this yr?

The numbers don't add up according to me. If 1 aircraft needs 8 FO's and 8 Skippers then that's 16 drivers per 1 a/c. Already K.A is struggling with getting enough skippers hence K.A having a few expatriates. Assuming retirement, attrition rate and expiring of expatriates contracts shouldn't the numbers be higher?

KQ 2

Probably you guys have already seen this but for those who haven't, KQ 2 have been admitted to AIFA (i think those are the guys who were asked whether they are still interested in the process.). I hope many groups will be taken this year in quick succession as was the case in 2011.

Gear up job

remember i said only FO's were moving from the 737 to the 787, the left seat will be crewed by the 767 Skippers.

KQ management is playing politics, that is why they are having expat Captains right now. You tell me the rationale of bringing in expats while you have over 40 F.O's who have met the upgrade requirements and are stuck on the higher fleet waiting for their promotion. As things stand currently i just don't see that huge shortage on the left that everyone keeps yelling about. What about the Kenyan skippers who were rendered jobless when jet link folded, are they not good enough for KQ Ejets, what about 540 pilots struggling to get into KQ and not even being given as much as a glance. If you are holding a Kenyan passport and you are jobless right now, its probably because of all these shenanigans by the Management.

If K.Q highers from within, it also creates employment out of K.Q and creates a more vibrant pool of pilots to pick from in the future. Anyway i digress, sorry. The fact is a lot of movement should be on the right side, as mentioned earlier all 767 F.O's are moving to the E. jet on the left, that is about 40 of them waiting at present. No new Embraers this year, there are already a total of 20 E190's which was the target anyway, and 5 E170's which will soon be faced out. Two 738's to be delivered next year, creating more need on the Narrow body.

Wrong move

CaptainGG. I doubt if its right to call the HR. Lets give them time. Most likely the airforce has handed over the results to KQ. Calling the HR makes one look like forcing self to KQ system.

Or who wanna be a guinea pig and do me a favor by calling the HR?

odericko2000

I think chances of winning a lottery are higher than being employed by K.A. Am sure management knows all these things but they are playing ball. Do you reckon KCAA will grant fastjet license to start operating from Kenya? I reckon they would be a remedy for K.A....

irealest

You sure about your friend training on the 787? As odericko2000 mentioned above, all current FO's on 737 will be moving to 787.
