The "Smiling Crocodile" Investigated

According to someone I spoke to at Zambian DCA and confirmed by a Zambian Airways Capt, apparently SA CAA is up in Lusaka investigating J.O. aka The Smiling Crocodile. The DCA guy didnt give too many details but it seems there is an issue with the B732 ratings he's been dishing out and the 'pay for hours' scheme on the Q3 B732's he was running.
Not sure if they are investigating the FDP stuff too as the guy flies for Mango and Q3, reportedly sometimes in the same day.

None of this is official and as this is a RUMOUR site, perhaps anyone in the know can enlighten me?

If it is true, i'm glad Mr Jordaan and co are finally doing something about this, paying for ratings and hours just ruins it for the rest of the industry guys and gals who do it the hard way

Indeed, he is indeed under investigation by the SACAA - he was giving instruction on the fluffies without a rating - ouch! And that is just where it starts!

I agree, it's great that Mr. Jordaan and co are coming to the party and taking down those that behave irresponsibly towards aviation...

Smiling Crodile

Yup this is no rumor the SA CAA were in Lusaka looking at his Command time on B737-200 on which he was not rated from October to May , I believe the comapany under which this happened was DISCOVERY CREW RECOURSES or something bet he has a finger in there as well as all the training done at the only serviceable Sim near ORT, I feel sorry for those who paid for hours & ratings that may all be withdrawn.

I hope all the Pilots get together with a Mass Action Law Suit and get their money back.

I believe they are also investigating all the Command hours that he claimed on the A320 at Flight Star.

Why don't all the Guys and Gals that have been ripped of get together and give Mr Jordaan all the info to put this guy to bed once and for all.

Word is CAA has been at Mango pulling FDP records, old rosters, asking for logbooks etc. Seems the noose is tightening...

Same guy?

A “ instructor" was recently banned from a local airline that has some 737 sims for giving instruction on aircraft he was not rated on!

Same guy?

Has anything further come of this, or are they just going to let it die a peaceful death?

I worked for Flightstar as Capt. from inception to closure so would be interested to know who this joker is.

Hi Ex Blue Stork,

I believe the the Smiling Crocodile is none other than J.O himself Johan Oli(4) in afrikaans, he has had scams running for years " do you want a conversion and time on the airplane " then the pilots join in on the scheme get training on the airplane, but the trouble is too many pilots, they dont get their hours he pockets the money.
This happened on Merlins, fly freight out of George for awhile then he graduated to Convair 580,s called himself SKYHAUL, the Fed's in SA started ckecking, believe he flew a whole while with no CV 580's on the AOC, went to the Congo, reportedly flying grossly overweight again reported to the SA Fed's. The Company lost 2 Aircrfat one in an incident on the ground a Kinshasa, (not his fault , that belongs to an AN26 pilot) and another in a tragic landing accident, end of Company Pilots and Engineers did not get paid again, dissapeared for a while
Joined Mango got B738 rated.
Then he got involved with the Discovery Flight School an outfit that had a lighrtaircraft traing licene in Pietersburg. He then got involved with Alligiance, trained pilots on the Embraer through Discovery which had no authorization to do the training by the "SA Feds" then flew the B737-200 for Zambian Airways for 5 months with out being type rated on the airplane, did training on the Sim again with no rating I guess his Peers where now fed up with his antics and shopped him to the SA Feds this all occured while flying for Mango he had a busy schedule it seems.
The Feds require all the help they can get on this one, he was a F/O with Flight Star , was he a Captain ? that would be a turn up for the books.
It is going to interesting to see how he talks his way out of this one.
I hope the Feds will get this one right.

This feels kind of wierd....I mean, the SACAA chasing one of the dodgy people in the industry, who everybody else has known about for years......wierd.

Actually, what would be wierd is if they actually catch him for something....pity 'flying whilst wearing eyeliner and being male' isn't some kind of offence (well, I mean legal offence ), they could have had him ages ago.....

Ahh, I remember him quite well. With only previous GA experience (although he was a Grade 1 instructor at the time), he was selected by Flitestar as an A320 training captain, which raised many an eyebrow. He was one of four captains who completed Flitestar's first A320 type rating simulator course conducted by British Airways instructors at the Caledonian facility near Gatwick. This only came out later, but during the course there was much discussion among the BA instructors as to his level of experience. Nevertheless he successfully completed the course.

When Flitestar commenced operations, the line training was done by the same group of BA instructors. During this phase, JO's true experience and ability was finally exposed and to cut a long story short, BA refused to sign him out, not only as a training captain but also as a line captain. Flitestar's management initially opposed this but there was little they could do and he was finally offered a F/O's position. (The other remaining training captain suffered exactly the same fate, but that's another story.)

I left Flitestar about 3 months before they closed shop and at that point he was still not a captain, but I can't say what happened between me leaving and them folding. However, JO did complete the type rating course as a captain and also did some line training from the left hand seat, so he will most likely have logged some A320 hours as command time.

Over that period, he wasn't really considered a bad 'un, just someone who had been totally out of his depth at that time. He subsequently served his time as an F/O without complaint. Sadly it appears that since then he has been on a slippery slope with his foot planted firmly on the accelerator and the hooter blowing ... and he seems to have taken the wrong turning when he got to the crossroad.

Hazbeen/Neverwaz-100% correct about JO. Sould not be too difficult for the local CAA to get some facts about "Krokodil" as there is an ex Captain from Flightstar working for them.

Die Krokodil

I have lost an amount of R600.000 with Johan Olivier who now together with his wife and the J.P Olivier Trust is declaring themselves "insolvent" I believe that this is not the first time (Wonderboom Flight School) I was also one of those who believed in good faith that my career would receive "fast track" as advertised by Discovery Flight School, who he represented at the time, now Discovery Crew Resources I believe. The monies was paid into a trust account as advertised with "mile stone" payments and a back payment in the event of non compliance. I was offered an appointment letter on behalf of Allegiance Air, and was informed that the company is not happy with the cadet schemes ran by Johan and that they are going to end his involvement with them. Olivier managed to persuade the Zambian authorities to take over the 737-200 operations between J.H.B and Lusaka and made sure that other pilots including his son reaped the full benefit by completing their simulator training as well as line training with Zambian Airways. My simulator training ended at lesson 9 when the captain who trained with me was signed out without me knowing and sent to Zambia, as they had a shortage of captains for the operation. Four months later after not flying at all I was sent to Zambia for a base check with new cadets, signed out and left with an illegal rating. The C.A.A is busy investigating him and I would appreciate all other “victims” to contact me as I am considering legal action as well as a media campaign to expose JO for who he really is. I can be contacted at 0833240583 or [email protected]

Would someone PLEASE explain to me why this guy still has a licence? What confuses me, is how can you employ someone without checking his credentials. Surely one of his former "Referenced" colleages would have been able to provide info on said snake...

My dealings with JO were cordial although he was expensive to the extreme. Good luck with your action against him, if he has crossed the line he should be held responsible however from history i think you will find him very slippery and smooth.
