spendings
to answer : In the worst case scenario of having to go back to Aussie/NZ/Europe without a job after waiting at Maun for 3 months, how much money do you think you will spend?
+- 500 euro for a ticket to reach there
+- 400 euro per month you stay (this includes sleep/food/drink/internet but NO transport so lot of walking) B&B's are plenty
x X months
+- 500 euro to come back and if you arelucky a couple of hundred hours
Costs of licensing and exams are not included here and depend on the deal you make there.
No recruitment for the moment tho.
(am talking Namibia here, do not know about maun)

When I was there the lowest I could get my expenses down to was 500 pula per week including food, transport, light bar-going, and anything else that I needed. Comes out to about $65 / week.

Best thing for saving money for food is to hit up the grocery store and use the kitchen at wherever you might be staying. Also, those ATM machines near the airport are a no-go. I put my Bank of America card in one to get some cash out....not only did it reject it, but it took out 20USD for some reason.

If you have BOA card (like I did) then it's essential that you use Barclays ATM's. Apparently BOA have a special deal with Barclays where you can use their ATM's worldwide completely free.

Linkage
Since the thread has suddenly gone all Twitter, I too shall casually toss around a few @ symbols:
@ Deegan
If you are referring to the original video I posted on here last year on bush flying in Maun, then I can take no credit. For that, you must thank a certain 206Blackbird.
If however you are referring to my flight training videos (), then I thank you most kindly.
@ stone_crusher
You may find the ever helpful Csanad007's blog page handy for your questions. He has basically collected a load of info regarding Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Kenya etc. (ie. African Bush flying) for you to suckle upon, using stuff from this thread and other sources. I certainly hope you don't mind me bigging you up Mr Csanad007, but it is quite a handy little guide.
Now is definitely not the time to go job hunting in Maun, that is all I know. Too busy to train anybody.

No Worries
just trying to help a bit.
What I know:
- for Bots is NO GO at the moment.
- for Namibia also. But as Sefo is planning to enter into the contract business (UN, Red Cross stuff) there might be a need for us down there.
For some reason the link won't work in PPRuNe. But those who are interested in the blog can reach it through my public profile.
Best to all

Maybe later during the year
Had a chat with the Bots Ops. Its definitely a no-go for now. Operations is down by 20% although surprisingly they do need pilots.. Don't ask me how that works!! Safest thing is to keep updating your CV and keep asking the right sources before venturing down..
Cheers we all hope that the crisis gets over at the earliest even though job creation might take a lil longer. Fingers crossed and keep on smiling..

I wounder that Maun is dead. I mean, I am not there in Side, but it looks like, that Africa is still seeing same many tourists then last year. Up north and Kenya is increasing Tourism
World Tourism Organization(UNWTO)
The positive results in Africa (+3%) reflect the strength of North African destinations around the Mediterranean and the recovery of Kenya as one of leading Sub-Saharan destinations.

Any predictions on the requirements for the 2009-2010 season ?.
Thinking of heading down in Oct/Nov.
How accurate are those pay rates in the first post and how much do you reslistically need to survive down there each month ?. (need to work out if I can afford to do it with a mortgage etc to pay over here whilst I'm gone - Mrs Lj would be staying at home !!)
