No more over 60's
Just heard a rumor that the CAA is thinking of passing a new law that you may not fly commercial when you are past the age of 60. Does anyone knows about this and if its going to happen?

Ironically that is the law in many places except the U.S.. As I understand, South Africa is working on applied for Waiver, good until age 65. FAA is 60 for anything over 19 PAX basically..
Its one way of making the Pilot pool smaller.
JAR just started clamping down in the Caribbean regarding this matter, it will probably come to pass in a year or so.

Age in Avaition has always been a problem. Airlines drivers in the states always pitch a bitch when they hit the big six zero. Could be the loss of the great income for the heavy folks.
Either way Im not so sure I want someone upfront slumped over the controls..........I know it could happen anytime......uh...erg....gag..........

A flight was grounded in france last year after the authorities found out that the captain was over 60.
Its a good rule in my opinion. Some guys are already slow at 25, now imagine that same chap at 60!!!! Shudder at the thought.

I think that the French rule, which flies in the face of JARs? prohibits the Commander of a commercial aircraft from being sixty or over, even for an overflight of that country.
This of course has a knock on effect because life becomes impossible for rostering in England in particular. Thus, by default, if you like, in the UK one is basically forced to retire from airline transport aviation unless the airline in question only flies within UK airspace.

SACAA AIC 31.1.1 DD 2001-10-15 allows for pilots to operate internationally between 60 and 65 yrs of age conditions being
1.) As a member of a multi-pilot crew provided that:
2.) such holder is the only pilot in the flight crew who has attained age 60: and
3.) the aircraft is fitted with dual controls.
Domestically the upper age limit is 65yrs
This subject is also debated on other forums. There is actually a move to have the 60 yr rule recinded. Already Tanzania is moving towards 65 yr ( AIC coming out end of September).
Apply correctly to the French DGAC and you can obtain authority to Overfly French Airspace with over 60s. (Hydro Air)
There are many Simulator Instructors reaching 60 who no longer wish to fly but wish to continue Instructing. They are very useful to the industry as a whole. However, they may not pass their medical's for one or other reason, in which case CAA takes the view that only Licenced Pilots may do Simulator Instruction/Ratings.
Would appreciate support to keep these pilots in the Training Field/Simulator Instruction/Ratings as we sure can do with their experience.

Like every rule in aviation the age rule can be waived.
I will be 70 in October and have been flying in Holland for the past two summers , I have an exemption to give type ratings on the PBY and as well they have given me another exemption for airdisplay authorization in airshows....on a Canadian ATPL....so nothing is written in stone.
And I just had another medical in Amsterdam on tuesday, not only did I demonstrate I could see lightening and hear thunder but I passed all the other tests for the class one medical.
Anyone know how Glan Dell is doing? If you see him tell him that Chuck said hi.

Sorry, have to disagree there. I'm a TRE and in the sim I see the 59 year olds and the 22 year olds all the time. One thing that surfaces time and time again is low experience vs high experience in an unplanned situation. The high experienced pilots win hands down every time
Of course, you do get lemons in all age groups, but generally, if you give me a choice of flying as pax with a 59 year old or a 22 year old when **** starts happening, I would choose the 59 year old any day

Interesting post that.
Application to French DGAC will, I think, get you permission for one overrflight, not permission to regularily schedule such flights.
Problems have arisen in Europe, I believe, when aircraft en route have had to divert into and land in France with Captain over the age of sixty?
No problem having an over sixty in the RHS though so long as LHS is younger?
Must agree with Kep Ten Jim. My problem though is that I never grew up!

Yes, I am 62, and the young ones are eager to step on my Oxygen hose so that they upgrade faster... but my headwork is still ok when I handle my 747 classic... sorry I have to wear glasses (bifocals) since 15 years ago...

I have to laugh every time this one surfaces.
I started late with flying, at age 30. Now I just passed 58, studying for the writtens for a JAR ATPL. Will I get to use it? Who knows? What, I should just give up, find a place in some retirement home and sell the headset?
Nigeria, which I just left, was relatively ok about older-type guys. I have heard all the horror stories about France, on the other hand.
I reckon there must be someplace I can find another job, even if that means heading back off to Twangoland. Meanwhile I am stuck there in class with a group of bright children, mostly. The high-time one has about 250 hours and the rest have around 50 each. We are all having a good time trying to get through the writtens, so that is okay. That they are so far ahead of me in terms of employability despite being so far behind in terms of experience, well ... so what? Life is like that. If you cannot take a joke then you shouldn't have signed up, right?
