life in Uganda

Looking for info about life in Uganda. Specifically, my company has recently won a UN contract out of Entebbe. What should one expect as far as working conditions throughout the region... is it relatively safe? Much to do during time off? Relative to North American standards. And yes, I do realize the unrest this particular region is going through. I'm just the adventurous type looking for a heads up!

Thanks

Angry U-Ganda

Howzit!!

Also If you're involved with an Italian he's worse than the fat Yank. Be very careful of what you say to who. Especially in Rosies and The Lake Vic. Flying there is not bad at all, the weather is ****e every day, the strips are well protected to the east and west, there's a huge military base in Kasese and it looks rather scary on finals to see all the military activity, it makes you wonder if you've got the right spot!! The only strips that are dangerous in my opinion are the ones up north bordering the Sudan!! Otherwise the bread in Entebbe is always stale, because entebbe gets the leftover old bread from Kampala and further a bit expensive to live there if your contract does not include food and other basics. If you're adventurous you're the right man for the Job!!

Enjoy!

I miss 4 Turkeys!!

Life is good there bud, flying is beautiful, people are ok too. If you were to fly into DRC no panic, its scenic and i enjoyed it. We stayed in EBB on our tour, lotsa places to drink the lotsa beer they have! Friday nights buffet at Lake Vic is a winner for me, probably the best meet you'll find in EBB. Try the jet-ski's on the lake for your off day's, good fun too or go to the EBB zoo....

Kampala is not too long a drive depending on traffic and you have everything there that you can find in most western cities, maybe not the standard but its there. Cool flying club on the way to Kampala from EBB, forgotten its name but go have a few with the guys there, also find out where the airline/freighter crew night stop and go chat to them, ive met a few cool guy's and you never know what might come from that.

So, basically if you bored there then it's your'e own fault, lots to do and lots of NGO and toursists around.

Have Fun

SHIKAMAW!!!!!

SHIKAMAW MOFO,

Long time Bwana howz da new Kazi going?

I can definately say that that rumour is not true as I'm currently waiting to Start my JAA ATPL, here in Cyprus hopefully if all goes well I should be starting on April 1st!!!!

Really as much as I love flying in TZ I really came to the conclusion that unfortunately as I couldn't find a sustainable job after 6 months of battling that it was time to find new grass to play on so that is what I am now commited to doing.

I will always have a soft spot for Uganda/ Tanzania/and Kenya and all the cool rafiki's who I've flown with in East Africa!!!!

Happy Landings Bwana KOKOJUMBO!!!!

Blaster, If you want to see a few pics of Uganda, Kasese area, take a look at my site, follow the Uganda link

www.paisnel.co.uk

Try to get out of Entebbe, bypass Kampala, and head down to Jinja for a bit of Nile white water rafting and quad biking

http://traveluganda.co.ug/ata/
http://www.backpackers.co.ug/
http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/uganda.htm

The Yacht club in Entebbe is worth a visit/membership, often meet other flyers there.

Electric power is not always 24/7 so if you want power for laptop etc, get inverter/battery/charger UPS etc from Kampala. Also think about getting some 12v lighting. All above depends obviously on where you are staying.

Do you know where you are staying? has housing been sorted? Some nice houses along Lake Vic, on the road from Kampala to Entebbe. Nice one up for rent that I know of, but neighbours a bit noisy..

Vlamgat...how long has there been a big Mil base in Kasese? I was there from September to January. I saw a few Ants and the UN chopper with the blades off, but do not recall any big base. Ok so I was not flying into there, the Aztecs I was supposed to be flying were not, (and probably never will) be built. (see pics on my site link above!!) Maybe it was just not visible form the road

The airfield between Ent and Kampala is Kajansi, not sure of spelling. MAF fly from there, also a nice club with pool. Cant find contact numbers for it now, think I deleted them, but PM me, I may find them.

And the Four Turkeys, the rumoured place to be, but I only ever made it there a couple of times, also reasonable internet cafe next door.

Beer....Nile Special 0.5 liter bottles, 6.5% abv about Ug shillings 1200 around $0.7

Local spirit called Waragi bought in plastic sachets is the cheapest way. 15x60ml (abv 40%?) in a box, 9100 Ug shillings

For good down to earth health info check out the newsletters on Dr. Stockleys web site

http://www.thesurgeryuganda.org/

PM me for any more info, it is a bloody great place, get out there

Life in EBB is what you make it. Lots of ex pats around, SAFAIR and Transafrik both have crews stationed there. Lake Vic and 4 turkeys always good for a night out also try the Rock Garden in Kampala. If u r flying into Congo there usually no probs but I had a few fun times going into Bunia mainly due to weather, avoid any nightstop in Congo difficult to get food, high malarial risk and the nightfighters in the bars are a pain in the a**e. What type of aircraft are you flying?

Exclamation War

Yo Skyfarmer!!

I was last there when things were pretty bad, a lot of tourists got killed that time in the mountains by the guerillas(Sic.) It seems like it has become quite a nice place to be!!

Sorry then about the bad info, I just remember it to be rather gloomy flying a lot of coffins around!!

Regards

Bread is bread! Just as long as the beer is cold (Stick to Bell beer - best larger on earth)

Vlamgat, this was an isolated incident in a very remote area of the country. People in Uganda are on the whole very mild mannerded except in Soroti where the Karamajong are a bit loopy!

Bell is the best you'll get in Uganda but there are better lagers around. Anything by Nile Breweries has the stench of SAB about it and cannot be trusted to leave you without serious physical harm of the babbelas variety.

Which brings up the subject of Waragi....

The bottled stuff isn't bad and is a good substitute for gin at a fraction of the cost but beware if the vendor decants from a 20 litre plastic drum. That'll get you up there with the Karamajong, barking at the moon.

Goodness, look at the time! I'll be late for my perversion.......
