"At least two people were killed after two planes collided at the Nairobi National Park, police said.

About 44 others escaped unhurt in the Tuesday morning incident. The incident involved a Dash 8 registration number 5YSLK belonging to Safari Link which was headed for Diani with 44 passengers and five crew and a Cesna plane.

The Cesna registration number 5YNNJ had two people on board and was on a training session when the incident happened, police said."

Sounds very lucky for the Dash 8 . . .

No photos yet of the damage to the Dash 8 or visual confirmation of the registration. Doesn't appear on any tracking website at that time....

Sorry to say this, but the surprising thing is that this has not happened before.

i would bet the dash 8 was departing on 14 and the c172 was doing touch and goes on 07. ATC routinely allow the situation in which a training a/c doing circuits on 07, flies over the top of departing a/c. It’s always made me uncomfortable. All they have to do is hold the departing a/c for 30 seconds longer.

Apparently the midair took place this morning, the day is almost finishing, Kenya its not a Sudan or Yemen, and no further details, pics, videos, etc, has surfaced the aviation foruns, pages, etc....weird... :ooh:

I’ve found this, doesn’t look like enough damage to bring down the Cessna.

I think it's difficult to judge. Long time ago I watched a Brasilia (EMB120) come in to land in a hurry with damage to the nose (mainly the "plastic" radome). A minute earlier it had taken down a twin-engine Piper in a mid-air on the upwind leg.

Very certainly this much damage to a Dash 8 could be fatal to a 172. Presuming the possibility that the Dash 8 H stab hit a trailing edge of the Cessna ('cause the Dash 8 is faster), a crunched Cessna flight control could make the airplane entirely unflyable. I've had minor aileron trailing edge damage on a 182 and on a Aztec which made trimmed flight very difficult.

Wilson has become dangerous beyond any acceptable limit. Overcrowded on the ground and in the circuit.. Poster No 5 has the most likely scenario. I have had 2 TCAS RA under exactly that scenario.

Indeed, I no longer fly out of Wilson, it is just not an enjoyable experience. A while ago it was fun; a bit wild west, but busy and challenging. The last straw for me was actually the petty and stupid security. But on the ground and in the air it's pretty chaotic. Some operators have shockingly low standards, I recently flew as pax on a Fokker-50 operated by a certain company and their procedures were dangerous beyond belief. there's a lethal mix of training C150s and C172s packed into the circuit with a stream of commercial stuff coming in and out. The choke points off the end of 14 and around Monastery are total mayhem.
