E145 off runway at Orly last night
|
Big runway, small aircraft; interesting.

My French is not quite up to it. I can see there was an overshoot onto the ILS, and the aircraft landed beyond the touchdown zone, and there appeared to be a ~20kt tailwind component.
Can anybody provide a basic idea of what happened and why ? |
Too fast and not talking to one another.+ 20 Kts tailwind + contaminated runway and aquaplaning
At 1,000 ft AAL, stabilization was not mentioned, while four of the nine stabilization points were not met, the airspeed was 45 kt higher than the VAPP, the aircraft was not configured, the thrust of the engines was not stabilized and the "pre-landing" checklist had not been carried out. The PM was no longer carrying out his oversight function, as he was busy with other Tasks related to flight management and change of strategy. The aerodynamic effect of flap extension in ground effect, the aircraft's superior speed 30 kt at the reference speed at crossing the threshold and the tailwind of nearly 20 kt leads to a long landing, 1,150 m from the runway threshold, beyond the touchdown zone. . In fact, the area at the halfway point of the runway was contaminated with 4 to 5 mm of standing water as a result of the storm that had passed a few minutes earlier, when the aircraft was in final approach. The aircraft hydroplaned on landing. None of the elements they had allowed the crew to know the actual runway conditions. |
Thank you.
Very recent heavy rain and a 20kt tailwind component.........Challenging ! |
If you can read French you will see that it was rather more than the weather. Degraded CRM, autocratic Captain PM not taking PF seriously and making a unilateral decision to change planned landing flaps, with failure to recognise unstable approach, to carry out checklists, to react to warnings…
The tailwind and runway conditions were holes in the cheese, as was being in the only plane in the fleet without reversers, but they landed rather fast and rather long. The comments by the two pilots about their attitudes to CRM, and how communication proceeded are… interesting…. (I’m not a pilot but can read French) |
07/25 at Orly is roughly the same length as 26L at Gatwick. Even with a long landing I am amazed they were unable to stop on a runway twice the length of what the aircraft is capable of operating within.
