L-29 crash at Reno 18/9/22
Sadly an L-29 crashed fatally during the Jet Gold race on Sunday, video seems to show the aircraft in the lead and in a tight left bank, then rolling wings level or even right and passing very close to second place aircraft before rolling left again and descending fairly gently into the ground. Race red flagged and I don't think they flew the Gold Unlimited. Maybe GLOC?

Blancolirio has a look-see:
Looking at several other vids I doubt the aileron fell off. |
I'll watch that later but images taken just before impact seem to show it was intact. It did cross my mind that he thought he was going to cut the pylon... unlikely but a slight possibility I guess, surely more likely a medical issue of sone sort.
|
Turning RIGHT in a pylon race is a huge no-go, for obvious risk of mid air collision. I am surprised someone experienced in the activity felt the need to do this.

Also offers up an excellent YouTube channel: |
Possible I guess. Negative G followed by positive G with the elevator trimmed to hold back stick…
[/QUOTE] ..Something like that.. No control inputs during the last few seconds of flight = g-LOC.. What happened before that, we do not know.. Fly safe, B-757 |
He turned right to avoid cutting a pylon which would have caused him to lose the race.

Lousy day for the RARA family, and more specifically for Aaron's.
The full video is on line, and is sad; his reversal turn to avoid cutting the pylon brought him close to Pete's plane, and then the reversal was a pretty hard pull. |
Blancoliro YouTube video also suggests loss of right aileron…probably not contributory.

Does anyone know the drill in the event of a power failure when racing?
I have looked quite closely at the first few frames of the crash video and the crash aircraft is suddenly overtaken, bank increases a bit, descends a fraction, then bank increases and he climbs and the line tightens considerably. This is 0-4 seconds in the video. When the camera shot widens at about 5s he must be well inside the course and is in a steep bank (relative to other racers). The race is surely lost by that point. Could he have been trading speed for altitude after an engine failure and pulled in and up to clear traffic and at that time lost consciousness? |
Jim,pull to the course inside and climb, assuming you are clear.....Then .Mayday

Hadn't seen this video of the accident before.
