Seem to have been far too many accidents with pleasure aircraft over the years. Just recently involving float aircraft.

Two features of Alaska are lots of water and lots of mountains, so aircraft operating sightseeing flights are often floatplanes.

Sadly, when you fly into a mountain in poor weather, as reportedly happened here, what type of landing gear you have becomes irrelevant.

Wife and I were in Ketchikan on this ship 3 years ago. She asked me if I was going for a flight, and , despite having at one time a PPL for 10 years, I declined for the very reasons that DaveR gave. As one gets older, a little knowledge makes one think more carefully about risks!!.

Is very true. Though add to that thinking, that when flying floats in a water environment, you have many more landing opportunities, either forced, or precautionary. There have been a couple of occasions while flying floats in "rough" terrain, and deteriorating weather, I have picked a body of water, and landed. When things cleared, I took off, and continued. I find it much more comforting to fly a seaplane over forest/rocky areas/water, than a land plane...
