DAG HAMMARSKJOLD DC6 CRASH
 

The UN are investigating the circumstances of this accident again. I recall an article / report by a pilot claiming to have been ordered to attack the DC6, but not sure whether this was printed or online, or even a forum thread.

Yes that's some of the info. Wondering why UN are opening this up again. There were lots of 'interests' in that region at the time no doubt some of them did not want any boats 'rocked' that may have reduced said interest.

My memory of reading the accident report is that the aircraft likely just flew into the trees and crashed during a 'black hole' approach. The report did spend a lot of time considering various unlawful interference scenarios including possible shoot down from the ground or from the air or attack by someone on board but felt able to rule all of them out. There arguments seemed sensible to me at the time.

A number of reports here. The UN remains open minded as to cause, but I concur that CFIT as a result of black hole approach being the cause. Significant that the airport is not visible from the crash site and the visibility was reported as 5-10 miles in smoke haze. Distance from crash site to runway threshold is 7.8NM. Highly significant too I think that both the co-pilot and flight engineer had flown 17 hours in the previous 24. Tired??
