Piper Twin Down in Cincinnati
 

This accident occurred less than two hours ago so details are few and far between. The crash site is two miles from our home; the aircraft was apparently on long final to KLUK which we call "Sunken Lunken" here in Cincinnati. R.I.P. Soul(s) on Board.

Madeira Crash

Weather wouldn't appear to be a factor as Ohio was sunny all day today. Madeira is a suburb of Cincinnati, approximately 6-7 miles NNE from the Cincinnati Municipal (Lunkin) airport.

I was able to catch the N-number of the downed aircraft on a local broadcast: a 1980 Piper Navajo Chieftain occupied by the pilot only. The plane, which was on an aerial photo-reconnaissance mission, went down in an upscale neighborhood and the witnesses , all of whom seemed intelligent and well-spoken, described what appeared to be a flat spin during the final moments of the accident. Both wings, two-thirds of the fuselage aft of the cockpit, and empennage were intact, though fire had consumed the forward one-third of the airframe. As evansb indicated, Wx here was cavok today.

Radio news reports this morning indicate that the aircraft in question had "fuel system maintenance work" done immediately prior to the final flight. FAA and NTSB personnel were on site yesterday; the pilot has been identified as an experienced 62-year-old.
