Sad accident of Swiss disabled pilot in Thailand
Excellent weather here today but a bizarre accident.I have flown from both airfields. He left Nok private airfield near Chiang Mai to fly to the Royal Thai Flying Club at Chonburi south of Bangkok. Round-The-World Pilot Crashes in Thailand
Not much news on this. Anyone know the aircraft type he was flying?

No, but perhaps trying to fly out of a stall spin situation? There's something in the last seconds of the approach that looks wrong. Would his disability make recovery from, perhaps, a power loss difficult? Whatever, very sad.

The aircraft was a Flight Design CTLS-ELA with long range tanks. Mike Lomberg was a former South African Air Force pilot and test pilot who became disabled after damaging his spinal cord in the car crash. |
I met this group (www.handiflight.com) when they landed at Nok Airfield. The CTLS had been modified with ultra long range tanks to get them over the Pacific leg of their trip. They also have a simple mechanical lever linked to the rudder pedals to allow hand ruder control. Both mods looked extremely professional and had been certified. I only met Mike briefly but he certainly was a very accomplished pilot and those of us who got to know this inspirational group are greatly saddened by this accident. |
