It will be interesting to learn if pilot was trying to operate the ARCAL. Witnesses report hearing him circling many times.

Very strange. I looked up the place on Google Maps and counted 18 (!) airfields and airports inside a radius of 30NM or so. What sense would it make to circle for an hour (this is what the witnesses said according to the report) and wait for the lights to come on when you have so many alternates within 10 minutes flying time?

Yes, I concur. ALTN would have been the way to go at some point.
But I suppose that he became fixated with making the landing at CYFD, trying to get Lights On - if that's the case - and it hasn't been confirmed.

All very sad; husband and wife, oldish couple, flying in the dark, experiencing mishaps and ultimately failing to get home.
Thoughts are with their loved ones and family.

Let's leave it 'til we get the Report. Very sad.
