Cessna 208 in sea near Japan
Who knows what about the Cessna 208B that crashed into the sea near Japan a week back. Reported a the ferry flight of the 208B going from Australia to the USA via Japan. Probably oxygen related. Ferry pilot unnamed but reported as 66 years old. Who was the ferry company? Japanese F4 Defence Force pilots reported that the pilot appeared slumped over the controls at 22,000 feet. Small amount of wreckage found but not the pilot. Said to be a Norwegin pilot. |

The sole Norwegian pilot was missing and assumed to have died. The plane took off from Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, USA at ca. 07:00 Japan Standard Time (JST) for an international flight to New Chitose, Japan with estimated flight time of 9 hours. Though the position report at 10:23 JST was normally established, the next report planed at 11:44 JST was not received by the Japanese ATC. Two F-4's of Japan Air Self-Defense Force noticed the aircraft flying normally at 14:50 JST over the Pacific Ocean, but could not establish any radio contact with the flight. They lost the Caravan due to clouds. Radar contact with the flight was lost at 15:28 JST. Parts of the plane were found floating on the water at 17:23 LT. The aircraft was modified for geophysical survey work and converted to a Texas Turbine Conversions Supervan 900 using an 850 hp Honeywell TPE331-12JR engine (as opposed to the standard 675 hp PT6A-114A engine), and a 4-bladed prop. |

Investigation: AO-2018-065 - Collision with water involving Cessna 208B, VH-FAY, 185 km NE of Tokyo, Japan, on 27 September 2018 The ATSB is investigating a collision with water involving Cessna 208B, VH-FAY, 185 km NE of Tokyo, Japan, on 27 September 2018. During a ferry flight from Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands to New Chitose Airport, Japan, the aircraft disappeared from radar over the Pacific Ocean. Parts of the destroyed aircraft were subsequently located during an air and sea search at the last recorded position, approximately 185 km north-east of Tokyo. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, has not been located. As part of the investigation, the ATSB will review available data and gather additional information. A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety |
