Australia Day plane crash: Two dead, Perth Skyworks event cancelled

It looks as though the pilot was trying to turn downwind/base/final tightly within the harbour, while avoiding flying over the built up area. You would not attempt such a tight turn in an airport environment....

Looks very much like the flight path of the B-52H at Fairchild AFB 24 June 1994.

I thought precisely the same thing when I watched the Mallard go in.
However, I would hazard a guess, in this case, it wasn't the same as the carelessness of a major-risk taker like Holland at work - I would guess Peter Lynch took his attention off the airspeed for a few seconds too long, as he tried to work out the boundaries of the box he'd been given to operate in. At the height he was at, there's no room for error when doing a tight turn.

Classic accelerated stall...

Was this a stream of assorted aircraft along the river, with the one ahead going too slow, forcing the Mallard to reduce speed?

The Americans had a saying 'watch him spin, watch him burn, he took off bank in a low speed turn.' Maybe says a lot about this one!.

Classic "Oh I'm stalling, I shall pick up the wing with aileron AND in-turn rudder".
BASIC flying:-at low speeds ALWAYS use out of turn rudder FIRST, before ailerons.

Looks like there were no flaps down either...so,was it just for a fly-by ,or landing...?

Low Level Windshear?
 

Wind and obstructions, especially tall buildings, can produce severe windshear.

With a large wingspan, wind gradient can overpower the ailerons.

The video reminds me of similar glider accident videos where the bank steadily increases.

Was it taking part in an airshow? I thought it was just local traffic?

The Australia Day event in Perth, on the 26th January each year, comprises a substantial airshow during the day, followed by a major fireworks display, launched from barges on the Swan River, in the evening.

The Grumman Mallard was listed as part of the Air Display at 5:00PM, under the show title, "Unusual Aircraft Landing And Take Off From Perth Water".
