Here is the final report from the NTSB.
According to them, it was a loss of control following a partial engine failure... https://app.ntsb.gov/pdfgenerator/Re...Final&IType=FA The Australian safety board has published some information about managing partial engine failures. Of course, the most important item for most of the event is Airspeed, Airspeed, Airspeed. https://www.atsb.gov.au/publications...al-power-loss/ https://www.atsb.gov.au/media/411527...10-055_no3.pdf |
My last engine problem was a cracked cylinder as my student climbed out. I noticed the poor rate of climb did not tie in with the shallow attitude of the aircraft to hold climb speed. I had heard what sounded like a cracked cylinder on take off, but just thought it was the difference in headset picking up background noise. You might lose 25% of power, but feels like losing 75% of thrust.
