Here is the final report from the NTSB.

According to them, it was a loss of control following a partial engine failure...

The Australian safety board has published some information about managing partial engine failures. Of course, the most important item for most of the event is Airspeed, Airspeed, Airspeed.

My last engine problem was a cracked cylinder as my student climbed out. I noticed the poor rate of climb did not tie in with the shallow attitude of the aircraft to hold climb speed. I had heard what sounded like a cracked cylinder on take off, but just thought it was the difference in headset picking up background noise. You might lose 25% of power, but feels like losing 75% of thrust.
