Salvage

Sometimes planes return to earth somewhere other than planned. We joke here, "don't worry about it, it will belong to the insurance company", and there's merit in focusing on getting to the surface safely, but someone still has to recover the plane!

A recent event with a PBY Catalina, I believe on a beach in Florida, highlights the need to think about salvage afterword, and doing one's best to prevent further damage after the return to earth. It seems that an otherwise only slightly damaged aircraft, and a rare and historically important one at that, has been badly damaged during the attempted recovery. Details seem scarce, but it reminds me that once everyone is taken care of, and continued safety assured, we have a duty of care to the aircraft to the extent possible.

Jodel aircraft have a one-piece wing. A Jodel was damaged, repairable. The contractor hired by the insurance company to move it sawed off the wing to make it easy to transport. Now only fuselage was repairable.
