Germany. light aircraft crashes under parachute, mistaken for balloon

Sadly it sounds like no survivors from the aircraft and no mention of the balloon pilot

Obviously don't know the specifics but shouldn't be that hard to take evasive action from a hot-air balloon 🤔

Local newspaper reports, that the chute was pulled.
Wouldn‘t be suprised if that turns out to be the hot air balloon.
Weather wasn‘t quite that great for driving balloons as well.
Apparently three dead. So one casualty from the house hit.

That's why in the US free hot air balloons have the right of way over all other aircraft... I don't think that I could handle being in a balloon.

Chute pulled from the hot air balloon ?? What sequence of events do you envision ?

I think BDAttitude envisions the "hot air balloon" was actually the BRS chute, perhaps triggered too late to save those who died, or by the impact.

The article in the body speaks of an ultralight. Also that it apparently broke up in flight, that pieces were found away from the crash site.

When it comes to speculations, a strong contender is always the late deployment of the BRS.

That sounds plausible: the picture of the damage to the apartment suggests impact at a speed quite a bit higher than would be likely under a properly deployed chute, especially given the relatively small size / weight of the aircraft involved.
