Navajo force lands on a Calgary street

A Navajo force landed on a Calgary street at 5:30 am this morning. No injuries to the pilot and five passengers*. Some wingtip damage due to clipping a light pole.
Pilot reported problem with plane's fuel pump before landing on Calgary street | CBC News

The timing was lucky. Two hours later, this street would have been choked with commuter traffic.

This is not what you expect to see when riding the train to work!

* I listened to the ATC audio. No emergency declared, but right fuel-pump failure mentioned. Male and female voices on the tape, so probably two crew and four passengers.

This video shows both props feathered:

There's a mechanical engine driven pump per engine, plus electric pumps for T/O and landing, so I think it must have been more than just one failure

The completely unsubstantiated rumours around here are that the fuel pump problem may have been caused by a lack of fuel to pump! All will be revealed in due course by the TSB.

However, it was a remarkable piece of airmanship to achieve such a successful forced landing. Before Calgary International forced flight schools to move away, I had often flown in and out of YYC, traversing large areas of the city at uncomfortably low altitudes and pondering where I would land in the event of an engine failure. Apart from the occasional park, playing field or golf course, roads are the main option.

Interestingly, if my eyesight is good enough, the R prop looks feathered; if that was the dead one. It's been 1980 since my last PA-31 flight, but I remember it would not maintain level flight until the dead prop was feathered; then it flew OK. Calgary is 3500', so not excessively high. It was a good recovery and a controlled emergency landing. A 'well done'. I understand they were on approach to YYC. I doubt we'll find out, but it would be interesting to know why they could not make it on one engine. I know it's not a Perf A a/c, but in our annual flight tests SE flying with simulated feathered prop was possible. More current pilots will have some insight. I'm curious for nostalgic reasons.
