Incident at Camarillo today

Was flying the Maule with my brother to Camarillo. Got cleared to land 26, with about a quarter mile to the threshold and a few hundred feet my brother shouted "WTF"and pointed out opposing traffic just left of centerline steeply banked , at the same time a radio call saying " Berkut control and power problems" . I powered up for the go around and turned crosswind early, looking over my shoulder I seen the Berkut had slid right across the runway into the grass on the north , ATC advise that I head back to Mugu basically clearing the area , last I heard the guy had the canopy open and was waving so I assume he was alright .

There's only one Berkut in the country: G-REDX - I hope Glen is O.K.

FP , this was in Southern California, so its not the guy you know

Here is the tower audio of the incident

http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kc...2016-2030Z.mp3

at 13.41, you hear him announce "control and engine problems"

Strangely the female pilot behind me as No, 2 to land sounded like she was distressed or crying long before and unrelated to this incident occurring. My brother commented she must have gotten a scare on the way in as she sounded distressed then was instructed to go around. Not sure what was going on there

I did wonder about the location, but as you said you were "flying the Maule" I assumed it was somewhere "Oooop North" that I had never heard of...

pb84,

Interesting to hear your dulcet tones on the tape!

I was amused by the two guys who called up and were told the runway was closed.

1. "But my car's there!"

2. "The airport is closed. What are your intentions?"
"Land and pickup a passenger."

Quite surprised by the somewhat selfishness of the one guy late in the tape that was being rather pushy about landing , ATC's frustration is pretty apparent.
