As far as the cause of the crash goes, big difference between mushing down with both wings more or less stalled and a spin, which the "spiral" comment points to. Looking at the video, I'd hazard a guess that the descent rate in a spin is substantially higher than the 600-1200 fpm which the wiki refers to.
