If you're chasing a high paying job with a stable employment platform then becoming a L.A.M.E would be well down the list.
However, if you're interested in working on/maintaining aircraft as a career, then I say go for it! It can be interesting an very rewarding and it tends to be what you make of it. There are many varied pathways depending on your specific interests and if you're really keen, you can even jump from one pathway to the next.
In my opinion, it's no different to becoming a commercial pilot. You have to put in to get something out, yes there are sacrifices along with good days and bad. Ultimately it comes down to how badly you want it and are you in a position to move where the industry can serve you best?
