The only reason they would want trainees in the group is because they recently incorporated a lower pay scale for less experienced pilots into the EBA. We all saw this coming. Please see the thread titled,
"Sunstate pilot's Reps undercut Eastern pilots AGAIN" for more information as to why you'll be paid substantially less than your colleagues who are doing the exact same job as you. (I'm not trying to start another war here, just directing people to a thread that chronicles our most recent EBA).
But then again they're a pretty ethical company, they wouldn't exploit the desperation of young pilots in Australia would they?
If that's the case, why did they have a trainee program in place under the previous EBA when there was no economic benefit?
A traineeship potentially lets them get a longer return of service, the lower pay is just a bonus. The bigger issue seems they need FOs now, and direct entry guys can be trained up much faster (solving issues in the short term).
