When I visited Gatwick last year we went to London and we Didn't use Gatwick Express cause it was expensive. I've also done trains from East Croydon a lot as well in the past. No delays though, all was OK.
Meanwhile although Liverpool South Parkway station is connected by bus to the Airport, Merseyrail always operate a good service
