What time of day was it? At night the controllers can only descend to 3000' and intercept final at 10 miles. In this case the controllers cannot use the phraseology "cleared ILS" as you are not descending to the published FAF altitude, which I believe at EGSS is 2000'?
Otherwise, you might have just had one of the odd controllers who still likes to instruct it like that!
