In addition to the above - as I understand it - the RFC was formed in 1912 with a Naval Wing and a Military Wing. In 1914 the Naval Wing split off and became the RNAS, only to be combined again in 1918 as the Royal Air Force.
The air defence of UK was provided by both RFC and RNAS squadrons, initially commanded by an Admiral and later by a Major General.
