Yes, it does rather look like the Westminster establishment had seen early opinion polls and rather complacently decided nothing much needed to be attended to. It has now gone into full Cpl Jones mode. Panic is not too strong a word.

As a distant observer, and without commenting on the substance of the respective arguments, the 'Yes' campaign has looked vigorous, optimistic and upbeat. The 'Better Together' campaign has been every bit as dreary as it sounds. On such subjective issues could the referendum be decided.

I still hope things stay as they are as I believe both parties are the stronger for it, but a change now looks distinctly possible. While this would be disruptive and costly, if Westminster rule is so antagonising to the Scots, there would equally be longer-term recurring costs in continuing a partnership of the unwilling. So if it happens the sooner we adapt and get on with life without Scotland the better.
