He's actually talking about the attitude of the rest of the UK towards Scots, and how they will be treated in the same way South Africans were, so 180 out there - still sounds like rubbish, though.
and from the South Africans I've worked with, most were slightly baffled/apologetic about their country and were treated with a degree of sympathy rather than being held personally responsible (apart from the occasional idiots, but you get them everywhere...)
