I just happened to be there that day in 1980 summer I think. They closed the road and the aircraft taxied across with the follow me vehicle in front of course! Should never have closed that road.
Talking of naughties - going back even further when Dan-Air had a base with the vehicle fleet consisting of a Mini Van and a bush bike - it was a very quiet night during the winter so a couple of staff went off for a drive! around Beechwood Green. When they arrived back they suddenly saw a number of Comets on the ramp which had diverted from Gatwick due to fog with the one remaining staff running round like a headless chicken!
