You can rule out fuel dumping guys. Very little of what is dumped down to 1000 feet will make it to the surface. By the time AF447 was at 1000 ft, it was seconds from impact.
Trying to be at maximum allowed fuel weight for landing aboard ship, we always tried to save some fuel for contingencies which we dumped at the last practical moment, often on downwind and turning into the groove. The stuff almost completly vaporizes within seconds. Of course, if you stick your canopy into the flight lead's visible fuel plume, you will get a film on the canopy.
