EDIT:: While on this subject, I have found an interesting document published by the European Commission Transport Research Unit, titled
Clearance of Flight Control Laws using Optimisation. The document is dated February 2010, and in the Results section Airbus is mentioned as soon to incorporate the results of this research into its internal Airbus flight control laws validation process.
