A book that I've found very useful over the last month is
"Explore New Zealand" by John Cobb.
I found Motels to be the most reasonable accomodation (85-140 NZ$) and suspect renting a cheap car or buying one and selling it cheap on departing plus using motels is the cheapest option without restrictions.
