"Mentor Pilots" - status in EASA land?

Some owner-operators of VLJs are required by their insurance to have a "Mentor Pilot" with them. What (if any) is the regulatory status of the mentor in EASA land? Who is PIC? What are the experience/qualification requirements of the Mentor? I have heard that the Mentor does not need to be type-rated - surely not in EASA-land?
