When flight crews check in at their operations centre before boarding the aircraft, do they not review the flight routing? In which case, why did he leave it so late before he realised he didn't know about the new airport? (I am assuming that a lack of approach plates was the real reason - Approach, Tower and Ground radio would have given him everything else he might have needed surely)
