A SE IR would be better than no IR, BUT not as attractive to a potential employer as a ME IR. (and atleast within the UK there are quite a few guys coming through and looking for work with shiny new ME IR's)
If you're seriously looking to self fund an IR, FWIW and IMHO 'bite the bullet' and do the ME IR course.
