The Soviets had a long history of shooting down KAL planes, and in at least one prior incident, a KAL B707 was actually missiled by the Soviet interceptor Sukhoy-15TM ("Flegon-F") led by Captain Bosov , but the KAL pilot managed to land the badly damaged bird safely on a frozen lake at night!

About 1/3 of the left wing was destroyed but Captain Kim Chang Ky AMAZINGLY landed that wounded bird and saved everyone on board but two, who were killed by splinters.
He must have been a one heck of a pilot to pull that off.. .Now duplicate that landing in a sim.
