Happiness is a cold LZ with space for 50 ships. To the 500 troops waiting just off frame, "Gentlemen, your ride is here...."
The Hueys had a frame behind the pilot's door that held a colored card defining that aircraft, and the troops were issued a similar printed card. I covered a 50 ship insertion one day, with fast movers nape-ing the perimeter, and Arty prepping the area (last round is a WP that airbursts in the center of the LZ, as the ships were on 30 second final.) Timing is everything in life...
The courage, skill, precision and discipline I saw were in sharp contrast to what some think about our troops in Vietnam. I'd follow my Air Cav Troop into Hell, they were that good!
