Its valid, actually it’s a couple of km closer than Malpensa to central Milan although no direct rail link. And better for areas to the north-east.
Bergamo is slightly overlooked but well worth a visit. Very picturesque old city, great restaurants and quite a bit going on. It’s also fairly progressive, veganism etc is quite big by Italian standards.
