Look at what happened to a few regionals in America before Covid. They started handing back flying to mainline because they couldn't crew it. A few went broke due to lack of staff and the others all got rock solid, pilot friendly flow guarantees just to keep operating. These same airlines now are advertising again for foreigners.
I think the 1500 hour rule for F/Os in the USA had a lot to do with the regionals not being able to fulfil crewing requirements pre-covid. No such rule here, shake a tree and all the < 1500 hour guys would fall from it. Australia’s aviation industry is still a long way away from that.
