The only problem with that otherwise brilliant scheme is that HSBC own a whole load of banks in other jurisdictions, and would no doubt pursue the debt, wrecking your credit score etc.
Spend or transfer out whatever is left in it, ring them and tell them you’re closing it permanently. It’s straightforward enough.
