I had the option to join Ryanair post 2000 crisis. Didn't do it, wouldn't throw down the 30k, only to find myself working as an engineer for 3 years with a net salary that was 1250€ raising to 1400€ at the end. All that after spending 6 years (4 engineering, 2 ATPL) studying books... talk about paying back loans on that salary.

And I wouldn't be pessimistic if you'd like to join a major and nothing would move in the next 5 years... because it is already moving. I know some people who were widebody captain and went to a major. That's the problem these days... nobody is patient anymore. It all has to go quick quick quick. The upgrades will come. These days, a hired F/O talks about nothing else but left seat... there is no need for it. Give it 5 years and you will see... As a trainer I would say: focus on what you need to learn first. You will get there.
